Huh? Is this true? Will this fix my problem? I really do not want to spend $5,000 on a car that is only 5 years old. Question? My friend said there was a product that could be inserted into engine that would coat the heads to stop / protect the heads from the carbon build-up. Switched to Techron Supreme, SeaFoamed thorugh the intake valve to clean engine, and will also add some to gas for awhile. You should also know I'm a bad girl and have used cheap gas. Handed him SeaForm with intake instructions. Took the car back to mechanic, smiled and said do this please. Then a friend told me this year has a defect in the engine that causes carbon build-up on the heads and in the cylinders. Was told that I needed a $5,000 head job. My coils were all checked and they are fine. (Does all this make sense? I'm a girl repeating stuff that has no meaning to me!) Anyway, not sure why the cylinder is leaking. Compression Test shows 110 on Cylindar 2 with all other cylinders at 170-175. When light comes on, car starts to run rough. In fact, it usually comes on and stays on until the mechanic checks the code and resets it. Intermittant CEL, that sometimes won't go off. I am having a similar problem with my 2004 C230 Kompressor. In my discussion with MB today they essentially agreed that the existence of a TSB means that there is in fact a defect of material and/or workmanship but, since I'm outside warranty I'm up the creek. Can you folks make any suggestions on how I could poll other c230 owners to see if we could built some collective momentum? From what I've seen on the forums, it appears as if this is a fairly common problem. Has anyone had any success in having the manufacturer accept liability outside warranty? Does anyone have any tips on how to deal with the company at this point? I'm also curious to know just how prevalent this issue is with this model. I'm trying to reason with Mercedes Canada to have them accept at least part of the liability. My car is no longer on warranty (96,000 km and 6 years old), so basically I'm stuck with a bill of approximately $5000. We performed this and no change.Ģ) replace engine head, valves and springs. I had the car into my local independent, who performed a series of tests described in a technical service bulletin.ġ) ran a scope into piston #1 and identified minor carbon buildup on valvesĢ) performed a pressure leakdown test and confirmed 100% compression lossĮssentially, my valve isn't closing at all anymore, so I'm running on 3 pistons.ġ) run the engine at high RPM to clear carbon buildup. This photo may not be very clean, but there's wet oil right up to the seat.įolks, here's the latest on this issue. What could be causing this rust to appear on my coil, and what effect could it have on timing and engine performance? I also found wet oil on spark plug #2, which was the other misfire. CEL is back on, but haven't had the opportunity to read the code I want to see if the cylinder # changes, which would indicated a coil problem. Cleaned and reinstalled coils, but rotated to different cylinders to wait for CEL to re-appear. Verified with VIN at MB Canada that my vehicle isn't eligible for any TSB or recall work.Ħ) Began independent inspection (photos above). This work has not been performed on my vehicle. Refused service due to dealer's uncertainty that this is the cause of the problem.ĥ) Researched recalls sticky threads and technical service bulletins and found that TSB for engine venting code exists, but only in the US, not in Canada. Re-appeared on first drive.Ĥ) Returned to dealer for further inspection and quoted $500+ to remove A/C condenser and replace engine venting hose that may be cracked. Engine code cleared and car ran fine, but CEL re-appeared after two days.ģ) Changed plugs and cleared engine codes. Engine appears to bottom out when idling, and then engine enters limp mode.Ģ) Initial visit to dealer where they replaced spark plug boot to prevent moisture from entering cylinder. Engine runs fine at speed but idles very low. I would much rather learn to repair this car myself, with the help of a few handy friends.ġ) Have been experiencing intermittent misfiring in cylinders 1&2 (but mostly 1) according to engine fault codes. The dealership has been very unhelpful, and I refuse to spend another dollar on them. I hope some of this makes sense to someone, and you can help with a diagnosis. Here's a condensed history of my symptoms and service over the last 4-5 months.
